Small class sizes increase the time the teacher can spend with each child. More individual attention ensures that each pupil's strengths can be built on and additional learning support offered where needed. Teachers also have more opportunity to use flexible instruction techniques to suit the needs of each individual child.
Small class sizes improve the classroom atmosphere, creating a more responsive environment. A lower level of noise improves class interaction making the children feel more comfortable and confident voicing their questions.
Class sizes at the school vary at differing year levels. The teacher pupil ratio of 1:16 in Year 1 ensures that each new entrant is closely monitored. A ratio of 1:20 at Year 8, coupled with the extensive use of specialist teachers, prepares the children for a smooth transition to secondary school. (To put this into perspective - many classes have a quarter to a third fewer pupils per teacher than in many state schools.)
