The state of the art
To get a sense of the hive of creative and cultural energy and endeavour that is
Cathedral Grammar, consider this:
Every week there are more than 300 individual instrumental music, speech and drama lessons in addition to the usual class lessons. The depth and scope of this training is a springboard to a dazzling array of creative outputs.
Perhaps best known of these is the biennial Cathedral Grammar operetta. Involving every child in the school, recent operettas have included Fiddler on the Roof, Seussical, Pirates of Penzance, Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell and Oliver!
The school’s annual art exhibition features at least one piece of every child’s work, in addition to which is the annual Wearable Arts Show.
Around 90 boys and girls are involved in choirs, in addition to the 24 ChristChurch Cathedral choristers, while the school orchestra, ensembles and the stage band are of standards that belie the age of their young performers.
Whew! It’s a flurry of creativity that excites, challenges and engages children.
Just as importantly, it is the foundation of a lifetime’s appreciation of – and involvement in – culture and the arts.
