Junior School

New Entrants to Year 3

cathedral grammar071The first years of school are a crucial time for laying firm foundations and instilling a life-long love of learning that will make your child’s journey through school exciting and smooth. As parents, you will be keen to see that the transition to school is a pleasant and positive experience.

At Junior School, we aim to provide learning within a happy, secure and caring atmosphere where each child’s unique set of strengths have room to develop. We give children the opportunity, encouragement and skills to achieve their personal best in all aspects of the school curriculum, and to contribute towards their development as confident, happy members of the School community.

In small classes we foster self-esteem where high standards of achievement, presentation and behaviour are emphasized. Opportunities are provided for learning-extension and learning-support programmes, music and speech lessons, and extra curricular activities.

Small class sizes provide positive benefits

cathedral grammar083Despite ongoing high demand for places, class sizes are kept low to ensure each pupil receives as much individual attention as possible. Emphasis is given to competence in all areas of the curriculum through enjoyable and exciting experiences, while particular interests are channelled towards a satisfying fruition in the Boys' and Girls' Schools.

Class teachers teach the core classroom subjects, while specialist teachers take music, drama, and physical education, with an emphasis on fine motor-skill development. Additionally, there is extra help for those pupils experiencing difficulties or needing extension activities. The School-wide virtues programme encourages qualities of good manners and proper behaviours, as well as Christian concern for others. The development of the child, in the widest possible sense, is encouraged.

The essential parent-school relationship

Close co-operation with parents is promoted to ensure that each child has the best possible opportunities within an atmosphere of personalised care. To this end, parents are encouraged to share in the many Junior School events, Open Days and outings. This family atmosphere is further enhances by activities such as Grandparents’ Day, Pet Day, and the weekly Friday assemblies, a popular occasion attended by many parents who come to see the children present songs and playlets, and receive awards for achievements during the week.

cathedral grammar056The Junior School provides a happy transfer from home or Pre-School into the routines of school life. There is close association with the Girls' and Boys' Schools so that, at the end of their Junior School time, pupils flow on easily to the next stage of their education.
