Ryan Returns

James Ryan, ex-student and ex-All Black, returned to school today to speak to the Year 8 boys.

James Ryan was a pupil at Cathedral Grammar from 1993-1995. During that time he set a number of records in athletics and swimming, the last of which was only broken in 2009. He was a Canterbury representative in both rugby and cricket. One of his most memorable rugby games, even today, was the Grammar 1st XV win over Medbury. James won a Music Exhibition to Christ’s College, where he went on to excel in sport, notably cricket and rugby.

On leaving school, James studied law at Otago University, where he also played for the Highlanders. James played a number of games for the All Blacks before having to give up rugby due to injury. He then practised law in Auckland before taking up a position with Mainfreight. Now living back in Christchurch, he still plays cricket and C- Grade squash.

James shared some of his rugby and wider life experiences with the boys.  He credits some of his ability to achieve so highly to the self-discipline and time-management that he developed at Cathedral Grammar. His message was “Follow your passions, but remember that achievement comes from commitment”
