Religious Studies Curriculum | Cathedral Grammar School Christchurch

Built in 1885 as the parish church for West Lyttleton, St. Saviour's was gifted to the school in 1976 for use as a chapel and is now the spiritual centre of the school's life. All children regularly gather for worship services lead by the chaplain who is ably assisted by pupils, staff, musicians, and chapel choirs.

Besides  learning about the Christian faith, through the chapel services, the children see the Christian faith and values being lived in all sorts of implicit ways: through the virtues programme, the school's values which infuse the curriculum, and through the models provided by their teachers.

They learn about the Christian faith, other religious traditions, other principal religions, and other world views explicitly in Religious Education (R.E.) which is taught at all levels.  For younger children, their class teachers teach R.E. and the chaplain takes Years 4 to 8 girls and boys in a specialist classroom.

The chaplain also oversees the pastoral care programme, which meets the wide variety of needs of the pupils and helps sustain a loving, caring community of individuals who nurture and support one another. The chaplain is available to provide care and counsel to the whole school community.

Our links with ChristChurch Cathedral are as strong as ever. The major school services, Founders' Day and the carol service, are held here.  In addition to the Cathedral Choristers, other pupils assist as servers at the Sunday services.
