Physical education and sport are an important part of the school curriculum. Regular timetabled classes, under the guidance of a qualified physical education teachers, are complemented through membership of various sporting teams.
The sporting programme is designed to develop a sense of responsibility to others within a team framework, a keen awareness of sportsmanship within an atmosphere of competition, and a high level of exercise and fitness. Children also have the advantage of contact with students from other schools and to represent our school in a variety of sporting codes. Children also learn an understanding the human body with sports safety as a primary concern. As a whole, the sports programme aims to instil in the children an enjoyment of sport and a feeling of self-confidence.
The school places emphasis on traditionally high standards in cricket and tennis, and hockey, netball and rugby in particular, but also provides coaching in swimming, athletics, and table tennis.
Professional and highly qualified coaches ensure that the technical aspects of each sport are properly taught, so that the child can build on this sound base at secondary and tertiary level.
Children are encouraged to participate in some physical activity, whatever their natural ability, as achievement in a team can do much to increase confidence and self-esteem.
Once pupils enter Year 4 they are expected to play in a school team on Saturday mornings.
